Flensted Mobiles are a traditional handicraft in Denmark. The first modern designer mobile was made there in 1954. It was then that Christian and Grethe Flensted designed the Stork mobile to celebrate the baptism of their daughter. Demand for the Stork mobile surpassed all expectations, and it still ships worldwide over 50 years later. Today Flensted Mobiles is based on the Danish island of Funen, the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson, where it creates its very own design fairy tales from the old village school in Brenderup.
Flensted mobiles were originally available only through independent bookstores and craft centers. As the reputation and demand for its products grew however, the company began selling internationally through museums, gallery gift outlets and high-end design stores. Amongst some of the more prestigious installations that Flensted Mobiles has designed for are those at Tate Modern, London, and the Gugenheim, New York.
Christian Flensted is known in Denmark as the 'Uromager', a word which translates into English as "maker of things mischievous and always on the move". Looking through the Flensted Mobiles collection, one quickly sees how fitting this nickname is. The mobiles are designed in such a way that the individual elements are in constant motion, whilst the mobile as an entirety maintains a harmonic balance. The effect of watching them is truly remarkable; they convey a sense of serene calm, whilst bringing a gentle movement to otherwise static environments. This makes them perfect fixtures for any space, from the bedroom to the office.
