Carl Hansen & Son is one of the few furniture manufacturers whose career has spanned over a century of changing tastes and technologies. From their humble beginnings as a furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908, the company has always been known for the exceptional quality of their craftsmanship. In the late 1940's, Carl Hansen was looking for fresh talent to supplement the company's design range. One of the architects who caught their eye was Hans J. Wegner, a young pioneer whose work had been receiving much critical acclaim at specialist exhibitions. Carl Hansen took a chance on Wegner's groundbreaking designs, and the gamble paid off. To this day, Carl Hansen & Son only produces furniture designed by Hans J. Wegner.

From the outset, Wegner's concepts proved to be difficult to manufacture. With their distinctive, sculptural forms, his designs were ambitious to say the least, and their construction demanded the utmost in imagination and attention to craftsmanship. The resulting furniture is clearly demanding of its iconic status. Many Carl Hansen & Son pieces, such as the illustrious Wishbone Chair, are rightfully regarded as design classics, and have helped make Danish Design world famous. Wegner has worked with a wide range of materials, but it is his unique understanding of wood, its possibilities and limitations, which has been responsible for the timelessness of Carl Hansen & Son's furniture. Each item is a unique product with its own dialect, yet the whole catalogue shares a consistent language, making them easy to combine and create the most comfortable and beautiful of spaces.
