The foundations of Artifort were laid by Jules Wagemans in 1890. By the 1930's his son, Henricus Wagemans, had expanded the business into a well known furniture manufacturer with a showroom in Amsterdam. As the company's reputation grew, there was a need to establish a name which would make sense through different languages and cultures. In 1928 the new brand name became Artifort, derived from the Latin word ars' meaning art or knowledge, and fortis' meaning strong or powerful. The word comfort' is also reflected in this brand name.
The difficulties of the economic crisis of the 1930’s and later, increased competition on the international design scene after WWII demanded imaginative solutions. Artifort responded to both these challenges in the same way; by establishing for themselves a distinct profile, a strong and unique identity which solidified their status as leaders in their field. This identity is unmistakably present in Artifort's products today. Though the company has always responded to the flow of time, one can clearly see a common thread which draws together the evolving designs of the company's history. The forms are eye-catching and bold, the lines deceptively simple, the colors striking. Whilst the revival of styles from the nineteen sixties and seventies ensures that Artifort's classics are more popular than ever, the company continues to welcome fresh design talent to work with them. Every year, Artifort presents a different collection that reflects it's character and internationally recognized style.
